LOGAN — It isn’t everyday that individuals are treated to a
makeover and have their picture taken, but that’s precisely what clients
of Hocking County Developmental Disabilities did on Thursday when they
were treated to having their hair and makeup done, compliments of Mary
Kay Cosmetics and Goodwill Industries.
Thirty clients, who work at Goodwill sorting clothing to
determine the best quality to sell at the store, operate the cash
register, and complete other duties associated with running the business
each received a treat that included a makeover and a professional
photograph by Terri Jean Photography. The photographs can be sent out to
family members just in time for the holidays.
“These clients hang every bit of clothing in this store, and
that’s 1,000 to 2,000 pieces of clothing a day, to make sure it’s of
quality to sell,” explained Yolanda Calvo, a habitational supervisor who
supervises the clients.
For some of them, she noted, there was a bit of a learning curve
while first sorting the quality items, since some of them have lived in
difficult circumstances and couldn’t quite understand why some
perfectly good clothing items, in their view, were not acceptable.
“They had to learn — especially if they lived in poverty — and
it was hard for them to understand that they might wear something with a
stain on it, but we can’t put that on the floor here,” Calvo explained.
Receiving a makeover was something that many of the clients had
never experienced before, and tears were even shed by some when they saw
themselves in the mirror and realized that they, too, are beautiful.
“For them to get their hair done, it was awesome,” Calvo said.
“It was awesome because some had never had a makeover done before, and
said they had never felt beautiful before.”
“Yesterday it was such an eye-opening experience because I
didn’t realize they felt that bad about themselves,” she added. “They
walked out of here with their head held high.”
Besides working during the week, clients also routinely hold
fundraisers for local food pantries in order to hold special events.
Most recently, they raised enough money to host a dance that was
attended by clients from seven nearby counties.
Clients who work at Goodwill that were treated to a makeover

Shannon Shuttleworth, Brian Springer, Shawn Smyers, Roger Tschappat,
Chris Tucker, Gary Webb and Bonnie Wharton.
