more facts about Joan

Joan of Arc (1412-1431) is the most famous female military hero in Europe, a national heroine in France and a saint in the Catholic Church. During the Hundred Years War (1337-1453), Joan of Arc's legendary military feats led to the liberation of France from England.

What made her accomplishments even more extraordinary was that Joan of Arc was young, illiterate, a peasant and female. Any one of these factors would have normally ruled her out of any military leadership role.

Shakespeare, Voltaire, Schiller, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Twain, Shaw and Brecht all created works about her. Contemporary books, films and plays continue to do so.

Here is an example of how women may have dressed in the middle ages. Of course these are most likely NOT peasant women, which is what Joan was.
