And just in time for the release of The Hobbit, which we have yet to see. (pout)
JRR Tolkein (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien) was born in 1892 and was a British professor and writer. He died in 1973.
Here's a few facts about one of Si's mom's favorite authors:
1. He was at one time a close friend of C. S. Lewis (You might know him as the author of The Chronicles of Narnia).
2. By 1904, Tolkien and his brother were orphans. His father (Arthur) died of rheumatic fever in February of 1896. Mabel, their mother, died of complications from diabetes on 14 November 1904.
3. At one point during his first semester at Oxford, Tolkien stole a city bus as a prank, and took his friends on a joyride.
4. In 1918, Tolkien was hired to work on what was to become the Oxford English Dictionary. Started in 1879, by the time Tolkien joined the team they had finally reached the “W”s.
5. Tolkien’s four children were the ultimate inspiration for his fiction writing.
6. When Tolkien’s son Michael entered the army he listed his father’s profession on his paperwork as “Wizard.”
7. The inspiration for Bilbo and Frodo Baggins' home of Bag End came from Tolkien's aunt's farm of the same name.
8. As a child, Tolkien was bit by a large South African tarantula called a baboon spider.
9. Until he went off to school, Tolkien was tutored by his mother, Mabel, and Ronald, as he was called by the family, was not only a keen student, his favorite lessons were languages, and therefore was taught the rudiments of Latin quite early.
10. Tolkien counted the old English epic poem "Beowulf" as one of his most valued resources and inspirations.
