To write or not to write...

I am to lecture May 24th for 2 hours at Ohio University. The title: MAMA WHAT'S AN INDIAN.

Summary: Summary: Exploration of what children see and hear about indigenous people from contemporary media, literature, television, music, toys, advertising, and so forth. Will examine the images, their messages, the inaccuracies of these messages, how children perceive what they see and hear and how if affects indigenous people today, plus how to counter those messages and the truth about Native American people of past and present. Lecture will include: an exhibit and handouts.

And so I have less than 2 weeks to write the lecture (and turn it into a Native Truth column), create the visual aides, try to figure out what's wrong with the mosaic program because I really wanted to take that in (it's about 5 foot high and made of nearly 3000 images), create the handouts and send press releases. And I also need to practice it a few times.

Needless to say, I've been swamped. Ugh!

Terri wish I could contribute. but your situation is so different from ours here in India.

We call ourselves civilised and we consider the natives as uncivilised. It is the arrogance of being civilised that we impose our thinking on the natives.

The natives have a clear idea of balancing the nature. They will not do anything to damage their environment. They acted with wisdom. In early 20th century Yellowstone was declared national park and declared a protected area (please correct me if I am wrong)
So the park management banned the natives from entering and hunting elks bisons and other animals. That was a big mistake. within 30 years, the entire vegetaion of yellowstone national park started disappearing as the elk population grew out of proportion. then the park rangers started shooting down the elks like mad.

NGOs and Chistian missionaries have destroyed the local tribal population here in India. The tribals never knew what money was. Now they just drink all the time and gamble wearing t shirts and jeans. The women folk do all the manual labour. Now to earn more paper money, they ignore their lands, the husbands force their wives into prostitution or other labour in towns, they kick their wives get the money and go drink and gamble.
